Tutoring Methods

Our tutors have the unique opportunity to work one-on-one with their students and are able to customize their plan of instruction to the needs of each student. Before starting a tutoring project, we administer a research-based survey* which determines each student’s unique approach to learning (www.AboutLearning.com). Our highly qualified tutors base their plan of instruction on the results of this assessment and customize their lesson plan with an awareness of how the student learns best.

This approach will not only help our students to overcome academic challenges in the short-term, but more importantly, once our students have a true understanding of how they learn best, they gain more control in their approach to learning tasks. As students become more familiar with their strengths, they will be better able to deal with the kinds of learning tasks they find more difficult.

Working with students on a one-on-one basis also allows our tutors to determine each student’s skill level and start at the student’s comfort level. This is important, because it not only bridges any gaps left from the classroom, it also allows the student to feel some success and recognize that he/she can achieve at something related to school. Once the student has gained some confidence and motivation, the tutor gradually moves to more challenging subjects.

We consider our tutors "learning coaches" as they look at all the different factors that affect a student's learning ability. Some of these factors are study habits, learning environment, organizational, and time management skills. After carefully examining these factors, our tutors gradually integrate effective study skills/habits into their tutoring sessions.

*This survey is offered to students in 7th through 12th grade, if it is determined to be beneficial. Designers of this survey do not recommend this survey for younger students, as they may not be able to comprehend some of the questions and concepts.
